More than 50 apps, all free, in the official Android Market have been found to harbor a rogue piece of software called DroidDream. It's a Trojan that can steal your phone’s sensitive data and download malicious code to the phone from remote servers, researchers at the security firm Kaspersky Lab reported.

Until now, all the infected Android apps found so far had come from "off-road" sources, often websites selling pirated software. The easiest way for a user to avoid infection was to disable the installation of apps from any source other than the Android Market. That's no longer the case.

DroidDream is particularly vicious. In addition to gathering a phone’s identifying information — the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) and International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) — it can break out of the Android Sandbox, a security feature that quarantines mobile malware from spreading throughout the device.

This means the phone is capable of accessing and downloading more malicious code without the user’s knowledge.

“There’s no way to know what the app does after it’s installed, and the possibilities are nearly endless,” Aaron Gingrich of the Android security blog Android Police wrote.

Google removed the dangerous Android apps from the Android market, but researchers say that as many as 200,000 downloads occurred before they could be taken out.
